BREAST LIFT SURGERY (MASTOPEXY)
Breast tissue is dynamic in nature. During adolescence, breasts develop and vary in size and structure based on individual characteristics. Following childbirth and weight fluctuations, the skin acts as the covering for the enlarging breast. Over time, the quality of the skin and the supportive connective tissue within the breast deteriorates. Even if the breast shrinks after enlargement, the skin and support tissue cannot regain their former shape, resulting in sagging akin to an empty bag. Surgical procedures performed to restore the distorted breast shape are called breast lift surgeries. The aim is to reposition the support of your breast tissue, attempting to return the nipple to its original position. However, this reshaping process may sometimes not be sufficient on its own. If there is significant volume loss in the breast tissue, it may be necessary to replace this lost volume. For this purpose, breast implants may also be used during breast lift surgery to achieve better results.
WHY IS BREAST LIFT SURGERY PERFORMED?
There are various factors that contribute to breast sagging. As people age, loss of skin elasticity affects several areas of the body, including breast tissue. Hormonal changes, genetic inheritance, pregnancy, breastfeeding, the effects of gravity, weight fluctuations, and smoking can exacerbate the extent of sagging. Breast lift surgeries are procedures performed to reduce or eliminate these problems.
PRECAUTIONS BEFORE BREAST LIFT SURGERY
A breast examination must be conducted before surgery. In cases where there may be potential risks or for individuals over the age of 40, breast ultrasound and mammography should be used to evaluate the breasts and determine if surgery is appropriate. Quitting smoking before the operation facilitates quicker and smoother recovery. Aspirin and certain other medications, as well as some herbal supplements or foods, should be discontinued before surgery as they can increase the risk of bleeding after the operation.
SURGICAL METHODS FOR BREAST LIFTING
The most appropriate technique for breast lift surgeries is determined after an examination, considering factors such as the degree of breast sagging, tissue elasticity, and whether there is any volume loss. Depending on the degree of deformation, incisions may be made around the nipple, vertically from the nipple downward, or in a reversed T-shape.
ANESTHESIA METHOD AND DURATION
Breast lift surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and typically last about 3 hours. Patients are usually discharged on the same day or the day after surgery. Stitches are removed around days 10-12. By wearing the recommended supportive bra, patients can return to their daily activities and social life within a few days.
RECOVERY PERIOD
Depending on the degree of sagging and the surgical method, there may be different sizes and locations of scars after breast lift surgeries. Particularly in the first few days, there may be pain during arm movements, managed with strong painkillers. Depending on your surgical method, drains may be placed on both sides of your breasts, which are typically removed within the first few days. It takes about 3-4 months for your breasts to achieve their ideal shape.
POST-BREAST LIFT SURGERY PRECAUTIONS
- Avoid lifting or pushing heavy objects for 3-4 weeks.
- Limit your exercise routines for a few weeks.
- Regularly wear the bra recommended by your doctor.
- It takes about 6-8 weeks for your wound areas to soften and your tissues to strengthen. During this time, aside from gentle touching, you should avoid any intervention with your breasts.
- If you have expectations regarding breastfeeding, the surgery will preserve your milk ducts, ensuring there are no physical barriers.
